things. It does so in a way that greatly differs from other forms of written art. One critic notes, for example, that "Poetry might be defined, initially, as a kind
of language that says more and says it more intensely than does ordinary language" (Reuben). The following paper examines three different poems, focusing on aspects of each that seem to
bring the poem alive. The poems discussed are "Funeral Blues" by Auden, "Ethics" by Linda Pastan, and "Driving Lessons" by Neal Bowers. Imagery In the opinion of this
particular writer imagery is one of the most important aspects of a poem when it comes to feeling and enjoying the power of a poem. In Ethics, for example, in
two particular lines we can truly see what is taking place, and feel the energy of the class: "restless on hard chairs/ caring little for pictures or old age" (Pastan
6-7). This creates the image of students who cannot sit still and as such do not obviously care for the lesson about a subject they cannot relate to for they
are young. In Audens poem we see the imagery of a funeral, and the sedate and mourning quality to such an image: "Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton
gloves" (Auden 8). Tone As one critic states, "The tone of a poem is roughly equivalent to the mood it creates in the reader" (Elements of Poetry). It
is like the tone of ones voice when they speak and thus incites the reader to feel a particular type of mood. For example, in Bowers poem we are perhaps
tense because there is a sense of choppiness to the tone. We are tense because the narrator it tense as he learns to drive. There is a pressure, but also
