a poet!" There are times when plumbers are necessary and were very glad to see them. But in the long run, poets are more important. Its the difference between the
prosaic world and the elegant one; between reality and fantasy; between plodding along and soaring. Poets use exquisite language and take the time to construct their works with care.
Every single word in a poem is placed deliberately, with great precision; its there to create a specific effect. Consider Poes classic The Raven, with its repeated sound effects of
rapping, tapping and so on, and the birds croak "Nevermore." The poem is chilling and makes us think about things wed rather not contemplate, such as death and whether or
not there is any kind of survival. These kinds of thoughts are not usually inspired by a leaky pipe. Plumbers are highly trained and hard-working technicians, but they are interested
in making repairs and cleaning out septic systems. Poets, however, consider much larger issues: who we are, how we got here, what our purpose is, where we are going. Some
of the greatest adventures in history are poems: Homer wrote The Iliad and The Odyssey thousands of years ago, and we still read them with excitement as we share Odysseuss
struggles to get home. An unknown poet wrote Beowulf eons in the past, and yet a new movie about it was made just last year, and another one two years
earlier (Beowulf & Grendel, with Gerard Butler of 300 fame in the title role). These great stories continue to inspire and thrill us, and they are poems. Its unlikely that
