of literary works, which do exactly that. Edgar Allan Poe and Flannery OConnor are wonderful examples of this genre. Gothic The gothic story or novel is usually one
set against a dark or menacing background. Although the characters in the story seem normal in the beginning, we usually have a foreshadowing or warning that something bad is
going to happen. This type of story will often include irony - a type of wit, satire, sarcasm or ridicule that provides the contrast, as in a play, between
"what the character thinks the truth is, as revealed in speech or action, and what an audience or reader knows the truth to be." In other words the reader
usually knows what is going to happen before at least one of the characters in the story, before the character knows it themselves. Other literary devices we will watch for
