contributing factors to his fascination with the gothic and bizarre. For one thing, Poes life experiences were consistently marked by death. His father, David Poe, an Irish actor deserted his family when Poe and his two siblings were quite young (Valley of the Shadow). Essentially, his father was "dead" to Poe from this point onward. Three years later, Poes mother died. While the Poe children had the good fortune to be adopted by a wealthy tobacco exporter, John Allan, Edgar never got along with this adoptive father (Valley of the Shadow). Then, in 1836, Poe married his cousin, Virginia. Six years later, after moving his family to Philadelphia, Virginias health began to fail and she died from tuberculosis. As this illustrates, death robbed Poe of the two women he loved most, his mother and his wife. While this fact explains, to some degree, Poes negativity and fascination with the macabre, it does not explain fully Poes fascination with another prevalent gothic aspect of his work, premature burial. The fact is that Poe was not alone in his fear of premature burial. Many nineteenth century Americans and Europeans held this fear, which found its impetus in the fact that physicians of that era were lacking in modern medical knowledge and, occasionally, pronounced comatose or unconscious patients as dead (Premature Burial). There were documented instances where the presumed deceased miraculously revived during funeral services and these incidents, naturally, received a great deal of publicity in newspapers of the era (Premature Burial). The fear of premature burial was so pervasive that Victorians formed an organization to prevent it, the Society for the Prevention of People Being Buried Alive (Premature Burial).
