"Annabel Lee." Discussion The poem tells of the love between the unnamed narrator and the beautiful Annabel Lee, the girl with whom he fell in love. Its easy to assume
that the narrator is Poe himself, but readers should not make that mistake. One source suggests that the poem is based on Poes grief after the loss of his wife
("Explication of Annabel Lee"), but again, its wise to exercise caution before identifying the writer and his creation as one and the same. Lets look at the poem. Briefly, it
is a lament of a man for his dead wife, but there is a quality of timelessness to it that suggests the two were soul mates and that even death
cannot really separate them. That indeed is the theme of the poem: that love that is deep and true lasts forever. However, there is also a suggestion here that such
a love is so special and rare that it makes even the angels jealous, and it was their jealousy that led to the death of Annabel Lee. Poe writes "She
was a child and I was a child, / In this kingdom by the sea, / But we loved with a love that was more than love-- / I and
my Annabel Lee-- / With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven / Coveted her and me. // And this was the reason that, long ago, / In this
