for community colleges invariably state their intention to facilitate the learning of students, provide them with the tools for success in their chosen careers and also to provide an equitable
environment that offers access to higher education for all members of the community. Stating these goals from a critical theory perspective, one might say that the goals of these institutions
is to reconcile the private and public identities of students in such a manner that the institution promotes the creation of citizens who are equipped to function within a liberal,
socially-democratic environment. As this suggests, many social theorists, such as Adam Podgorecki, feel that cultural institutions, ranging from "media to religion to scientific and academic work," are used to shape
identifies, "dictating what is accepted as true, normal or acceptable within a culture" (Def. Of critical theory, 2004). In this regard, the work of Podgorecki has particularly addressed the means
by which cultural institutions affect identity. Podgorecki (1990) asserts that "Whether we like it or not, we are living in the era of social engineering" (p. 62). However, he
also points out that this term has a negative connotation. Therefore, the term "sociotechnics" was coined in order to provide a more neutral term for "matters of just and rational
social changes" (Podgorecki, 1990, p. 62). The concept of sociotechnics was first introduced into the Western scientific community by K. Mannheim in 1940 (Podgorecki, 1990). His definition of sociotechnics was
that "These practices and agencies which have as their ultimate aim the molding of human behavior and of social relationships" (Podgorecki, 1990,p. 62). According to Podgorecki, societies have a
