short story A&P is a story of a young man who makes a very important decision, a decision that will change his life. While it is not seem to be
an incredibly powerful decision, in the grander scheme of things, it is a very pivotal point in his life and, as the narrator notes in the end, a decision that
truly alters his future. The following paper offers up an examination of the plot with a focus on the development of the narrator. Plot in A&P by John
Updike In the very beginning of the story Sammy indicates that some girls come into the A&P, a convenience/grocery store where Sammy works, and they are in bathing suits. He
is immediately drawn to them and describes little details about them, giving the reader the understanding that he is mesmerized, especially since they are in bathing suits and barefoot. He
then returns to reality and wonders if he has rung something up for a customer or not. He rings up the item and the customer begins getting angry with him:
"Shes one of these cash-register-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge on her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I know it made her day to trip me up" (Updike). In
this one sees he is a young man who is clearly not happy with his job, which is very important in the development of the plot. He goes back
