central points of the work and their value for an overall view of this historical period. La Belle Epoque is a term used to describe the 30 year period
surrounding the turn of the 19th century in France and the influences that led to what many perceive as one of the most peaceful and prosperous times in French history.
While many authors focus on the historical events surrounding this era, Rearick gives a unique perspective by relating the leisure activities that defined the social development of this era.
In his first chapter, Rearick promotes an understanding of the historical context of this period and the influences that defined views of leisure and social development. Chapter 1,
