In Thomas Mores Utopia, the concept of pleasure is inextricably bound up with the idea of work, and occupying ones time in a
profitable manner. To a great extent, the inhabitants of Utopia follow a lifestyle which is not dissimilar to our own: they have allotted times for work, leisure, sleep, civic business
and so on. However, More makes it clear that one of the main reasons why the Utopians are so happy, content and fulfilled is because they do not waste time,
or fritter it away, but utilise every waking moment to some advantage.
For them, pleasure does not occur as a result of idleness or selfishness, but from the knowledge that they are bettering themselves and
at the same time making a valid contribution to their society. For example, they take great pride in their gardens, and to a certain extent there is an element of
competitiveness in the way that they vie with each other to make their street more beautiful than their neighbours: however, we do not get the impression that there is a
negative aspect to this competition, or that they would sabotage one anothers efforts out of jealousy.
Their agriculture is carefully planned to ensure that they always have sufficient food, with a surplus that can be given
