detailed observation on why such a project is necessary. This paper briefly explores the method Sklar uses to teach kids about theater, and then analyzes the value of drama to inner city children. Discussion Sklars book is basically a teaching tool, but a very unusual one. It describes the experience of a class at the fictional "P.S. 34" in New York City. Using this make-believe framework, Sklar explores the challenges of getting public school children to write and perform their own play. Sklar starts from the premise that children know nothing about live theater, and hes probably correct. Kids today are raised on a steady diet of TV, with the occasional movie thrown in; the idea of watching real people up on a stage is exotic and strange. In order to make the concepts of theater familiar and easy to work with, Sklar turns them into games. The titles of some of the chapters give insight into his methods: "Theater Magic (introducing the goal)"; "Foundation (using the body)"; "Choice (exploring the senses)"; and "Action (understanding beats)" are typical examples. Anyone with any theatrical experience at all will recognize that these are classical ways of approaching a play. "Introducing the goal" involves all the children in a discussion of the project and how to approach it. It describes why such projects are worth doing, and how to develop them; Sklar describes a fictional class and the questions they have when he approaches them with the idea. "Using the body" helps the youngsters to understand the way an actor moves within the acting space, as well as how to control that movement, and "Choice" follows that up by helping them understand the way actors make their acting choices. ...
