can imagine the narrator as a young individual who feels they must grab everything they can before youth is gone. Or we may envision the narrator as one who is
a wizened adult who thinks that playing is a ridiculous reality that should be dismissed with in the world that is real. Bearing these possibilities in mind the following paper
examines elements or themes of imagination, innocence, and nature found in "Playing" by Suzanne Vega. Imagination There is a very childish sense of imagination presented in Vegas poem.
While it has many undertones of urgency, as it relates to growing up and the need to put aside play perhaps, we see an imagination that speaks of a child.
In the first lines of the poem we see this theme boldly presented: "Here I am and there i go/ Im flying high and running low/ Ill wait for you
if you want me to/ but ill be damned if ill stop the show" (Vega 1-4). In this we see the imagination presenting us with images of running fast, flying
above all things, and swooping low. There is an urgency involved as well, presenting us with images of a dream perhaps, in which one is swooping and flying to achieve
their ultimate dream. And, the reference to the show indicates an imaginative perspective of life in general. There is an imaginative eagerness that wants to see the show, the life
that is perhaps just around the corner. Another presentation regarding the imagination within the poem comes with the following lines: "See me go Im not earthbound/ I barely touch
upon the ground/ Like Mercury Im sailing free/ maybe Ill catch you next time around/ You can play if you want to/ but you have to know how to live/
