900s (Newts, n.d.; Berry, 2000). Whatever their actual origin, it is known that playing cards were in Europe by the 1300s and a four-suit deck with different numbers of courts
developed (Newts, n.d.). The four suits, however, hold different symbols in different countries (Berry, 2000). The 52-card deck was probably introduced in about 1480 and the Joker was incorporated into
some decks in about 1857 (Newts, n.d.). The Royal Court cards were originally representative of the members of the Royal Court. Playing cards fall within the Toys & Games
industry (Hoovers, 2003). This is a massive, diverse and highly competitive industry in the U.S. In fact, because playing cards are part of this huge and diverse industry that specific
data, competitive and otherwise, is elusive to obtain. There is a very long list of companies that produce playing cards. The best known of these seem to be the U.S.
Playing Card Co., which has several brand names of cards, Gemaco Playing Card Co. and Paul-Son, which produces most of their cards for the gaming industry (International Guild of Hospitality
and Restaurant Managers Inc, 2001). Today, Proctor & Gamble owns the largest playing card company in the United States - U.S. Playing Cards (Boyer, n.d.). The oldest brands, which are
referred to as vintage brands, include Bee, Aviator and Bicycle playing cards (Boyer, n.d.). These three brands command a 65 percent share of the market for playing cards (Boyer, n.d.).
