a group of prisoners are trapped inside a cave. They are facing a wall and tied up so that cannot see anything except the wall. There is a
fire and people behind them that move about, so the people see their shadows moving on the wall. When they hear voices, they believe they come from the shadows
they see, because they have never seen anything else. Some time passes and one of the prisoners manages to escape.
He goes out into the "real" world and there he encounters real people, real voices, etc. He therefore comes to understand that the shadows were not reality, but merely
their perception of reality. He goes back to tell the others about what he has seen, and to tell them about what life is really like. In this
way, Plato is describing his ideas about Forms. "Plato sums up his views in an image of ignorant humanity, trapped in the depths and not even aware of its
own limited perspective" (Washington State University, 2004). Furthermore, he makes the point that it is a rare individual who is able to escape the cave and truly "see" reality
(Washington State University, 2004). Plato asserts that our perceptions are essentially "shadows" of real objects. In other words, the things
we see and perceive are not the actual object, but a glimpse into the real object. Therefore, our perceptions are inherently incomplete. The real object, according to Plato,
is called a Form. For example, there are many flowers in the world, but there is only one Form of a flower.
