the mundane dramatic. Today, there are fiction or creative writers and then there are writers who simply report or journalize issues and events of the times. Usually, the former type
of author is thought to be less serious than the latter. Fiction is something that is superfluous in society, but for a writer like Plato, fiction is a way of
conveying important elements of the workings of law in society. In The Laws, Plato introduces Megillus, Kleinias and a person from Athens in a beautiful setting. The characters are found
on Crete, a gorgeous Greek Island. Megillus is a citizen but Kleinias is actually a political figure. These are the three characters that Plato utilizes to convey a number
of messages. Unlike current works of fiction where there are many characters and subplot lines, Plato presents a matter of fact relay of issues and events through dialogue. This book
is above all about law. Plato relays the inadequacies of Dorian law for example (Clark, 2003). Through his characters, Plato provides a critique of law as it has manifest in
the place of which he writes about. There is some action in this work. Yet, what the action is comprised of generally is discussion. There are a lot of ideas
bandied about. Plato (1988) begins with the Athenian stranger who says: "Is it a god or some human being, strangers, who is given the credit for laying down your laws?"
(624a). From the first page, the discussion interests both Megillus and Kleinias. Clark (2003) interprets the first move by the Athenian stranger to be to expose the shortcomings of Kleinias
