and practices can be traced directly to the Bible, with no other sources. Youre in danger of becoming a fundamentalist! Seriously, though, I know youre well read,
curious and highly intelligent so I wonder at your seeming acceptance of the Bible as the only source of Christian thought. Weve been friends for a long time now,
so Id ask you to approach the study from a neutral viewpoint; in other words, look at the evidence without bringing your own ideas of religious faith into it.
If youll do that, I think I can convince you that Plato had a lot of influence on the development of Christianity as a religion. We need only look
at two examples, his idea of Forms, and the famous Allegory of the Cave, to see the similarities between his philosophy and the Christian faith. The Allegory of the Cave
is so well-known that I hope Im not insulting you by repeating it here. To me, its so clearly a Christ-myth that it seems as though it should have
come after Plato, not before. (This example is found in Book VII of The Republic, which is available online.) As Im sure youll recall, the Allegory tells of
a race of humans kept chained in a dark cave. The mouth of the cave is open toward the light, but the humans are chained facing away from the
opening; further, they are prevented by their chains from turning their heads or looking around; they can only clearly see the wall of the cave theyre facing (Plato). Above
