Augustine was not a Christian in his youth despite the fact that his mother was (Fisher, 2006). His father was a pagan and it was these ways Augustine followed
(Fisher, 2006). His escapades are well-known and are comprehensively covered in his Confessions. Augustine was a famous orator in his day and as such, he studied the early philosophers,
such as Plato and Cicero (Fisher, 2006). He became a Christian at age 32 - the story goes that he had been involved in conversations about Christianity with a friend
and then, "he heard a childs voice telling him to pick up a scroll and read it" (Fisher, 2006; also see Stedman, 1996). HE began by reading Romans (Stedman, 1996).
Augustine first founded a monastic community and then, accepted an invitation to become a priest in Hippo where he became Bishop five years later (Fisher, 2006). Augustine became so influential
that the mere mention of his name, "Augustine Dixit," translated, that means "Augustine says" settled any argument (Fisher, 2006). He was and remains the theologians theologian (Fisher, 2006). His influence
can be found in many church doctrines today (Fisher, 2006). Augustine was a seeker of truth throughout his life (Smitha, 1998). He believed that truth is found through revelation, like
a flash of light that comes from Jesus Christ (Smitha, 1998). For Augustine, truth could be found in Scripture, which he believed was indeed the Word of God (Smitha, 1998).
