we face every day. Bearing in mind these conditions we present the following paper which examines the aspect of Platos work that involves piety relating to ones family and society.
Euthyphro In the segment in the work to be discussed Euthyphro has just informed Socrates that he is likely to be condemned in some respect because he has
chosen to turn someone in for murder. When asked who committed the murder Euthyphro states it was his father. Socrates appears aghast that Euthyphro would turn in his own father
and insists that the one murdered must have been a family member: "I suppose that the man whom your father murdered was one of your relatives--clearly he was; for if
he had been a stranger you would never have thought of prosecuting him" (Plato NA). Of course, the one murdered is not a family member or even one who was
very close to Euthyphro, but Euthyphro feels that it is his pious duty to turn in his father for committing a very impious act. Euthyphro replies to Socrates claiming "I
am amused, Socrates, at your making a distinction between one who is a relation and one who is not a relation; for surely the pollution is the same in either
case, if you knowingly associate with the murderer when you ought to clear yourself and him by proceeding against him. The real question is whether the murdered man has
