limited. Sartre, a philosopher of existentialism, and an author, presented similar ideas in his work as well. With this in mind the following paper examines Platos Allegory of the Cave
and the works and perspectives of Sartre as they relate to a persons search for identity and the notion of freedom. Platos Cave and Sartre In all honesty, freedom
is something far more intricate than simply having freedoms in a particular society. By delving deeper into ones identity and patterns of thoughts and beliefs a person can find a
sense of personal freedom that goes far beyond society and enables the individual to be a fare more enlightened vessel. In Platos
work, which offers a perspective of the notion of freedom through enlightenment, the idea is that people cannot really perceive things they have no knowledge of. He notes that individuals
who were refined to a dark cave would only see shadows and would not realize that the shadows were not entities in themselves but were reflections of something solid. But,
without knowing that something solid existed humanity would not see or comprehend anything but shadows. When shown that the world was far more 3 dimensional and filled with substance a
human being would be astounded but would not be able to really explain such realities to people who still believed that shadows were all there was. While this is
a very simplified illustration of the allegory, and may not include all the pertinent information in the allegory, it illustrates how so much of mankind may not know or comprehend
