text The Republic, Plato presents one of Western civilizations most accurate conceptualizations of the tremendous influence that education has on personal knowledge. In this section of The Republic, Plato presents
the famous Allegory of the Cave, which describes people who have lived their entire lives chained in a cave, with their heads held immobile so that all that they could
see were shadows cast by figures on the partial wall behind them. Examination of Platos allegory reveals the tremendous importance of personal knowledge, gained through education, as this process provides
the means by which each individual can transform their personal perception from that of a cave dweller to someone who perceives reality in the light provided by reason and use
of intellect. In this book, Socrates continues his dialogue with Glaucon by explaining the nature of the cave and how its inhabitants only know the world of flicking shadows
of manipulated statues, which are cast by the fire behind them. However, Socrates then relates that if one of the prisoners was released, allowed to "stand up and turn his
neck round and walk and look towards the light," initially, he would "suffer sharp pains" and be distressed, but he would eventually realize that everything he thought was real was
