for in such ideals people are led astray from truth and from enlightenment in many ways. With that in mind the following paper examines what Plato/Socrates, in Republic, would have to say about the play Antigone by Sophocles. Plato and Sophocles In Platos work there is a great deal of discussion about gods and about laws of men and politics. There is an understanding that providing people with false stories, magical fiction, is not necessarily a good thing. But, at the same time there are elements that speak of fighting against that which is wrong, as well as discarding what the gods may want in light of the fact that there may be no such things as gods. Both of these elements, or focuses, play well into a discussion of Antigone for she fought against injustice, but it was the fear of the gods that led to her winning her battle. Plato notes, "I might add ...that the just man will be scourged, racked, bound, will have his eyes put out, and will at last be crucified (literally impaled)--and all this because he ought to have preferred seeming to being" (Plato Book II). In this one can see that Plato may well have regarded Antigone as a very powerful and just individual, putting aside the fact she was a woman. While this speaks of men, and fighting for justice, one can see how she was bound and imprisoned because she was just. This is not to say that Plato may not have argued she was unjust because she was a woman and she stepped clearly outside her social boundaries.
