there were no intrinsic moral laws, no all-inclusive principles of right and wrong (Frost 83). As this suggests, moral relativism refers to the idea that moral standards are founded only
social custom (Moral Relativism). Socrates, on the other hand, argued in favor moral realism, which represents the idea that there is an objective foundation for the formation of moral principles,
and that morality should not be based on subjective human convention (Moral Realism). Socrates proposed that "No man... is voluntarily bad" and that when one knows that something is good,
he will choose to follow that course (Frost 84). Therefore, the task for the individual is to determine what is good (Frost 83). Socrates was convinced that there had
to be fundamental principles of right and wrong. However, Socrates is willing to concede that an individual can desire an evil ting if he mistakenly evaluates it as good
(Meno). He tells his friend, "...they desire what they suppose to be good although they are really evil" (Meno). Therefore, the most significant activity for man is to discover what
is good (Frost 84). For Socrates, "a life which is always inquiring and trying to discover what is good is the best kind of life, the only life worth living"
(Frost 84). As this demonstrates, Socrates had immense faith in the power of reason, in the power of understanding to secure goodness, and in the power of goodness
