by Plato or Machiavelli, it would be useful to look briefly at the philosophies of the two thinkers with regard to systems of government and the maintenance of the state, as well as the impact which their theories had on the structure of the Constitution itself. It is notable, for example, that both Machiavelli and Plato were amongst those whose political discourses were closely studied by the Founding Fathers, and therefore it might be anticipated that the final form of the Constitution would follow their ideas fairly closely. However, Platos concept of the state, as set out in the Republic and elsewhere, is not synonymous with Machiavellis ideas as detailed in The Prince: they did not have the same perspective either on the motivations and actions of human beings, or on the way that states should be governed. Machiavellis principles, as exemplified in The Prince, were intended to establish a monarch in power and allow them to maintain their regime in a stable and unchallenged manner: the kind of policies which he advocated were designed to prevent agitation by the population at large and the fomentation of rebellion, and to encourage individuals to occupy themselves with private rather than state matters. He saw it as vital that the ruler demonstrated respect for the cultural practices of the population, and their right to private property, and that he aimed to increase the economic prosperity of the state and to preserve private property.
