a marked difference in their ways of thinking. This paper examines their ideas of beauty. For Plato, beauty was an ideal; what he called a Form. Platos Theory of Forms is a cornerstone of his philosophy, so well look at it briefly. Plato devised his theory in order to solve some of the problems confronting humanity, such as how we can live a happy life in a world that is constantly changing; and how we can explain a world that seems constant and changing at the same time (Platos theory of forms). To attempt a resolution of this dichotomy, Plato developed the theory of Forms, in which he "splits up existence into two realms: the material realm and the transcendent realm of forms" (Platos theory of forms). The theory of forms allows us to solve both the problems listed above: "By detaching ourselves from the material world ... and developing our ability to concern ourselves with the forms, we find a value which is not open to change or disintegration" (Platos theory of forms). And if we perceive the world through our senses, then we can account for its impermanence. Thus, "[I]t is the realm of forms, perceived through the mind, that is permanent and immutable. It is this world that is more real; the world of change is merely an imperfect image of this world" (Platos theory of forms). So, what then is a form?
