fictional it is a story that relies on historical elements concerning slavery and one of those elements involves the plantation that the main character, Sethe, lived on as a slave.
On that plantation, Sweet Home, was a plantation mistress. The plantation mistress is a subject of little study, but a fascinating subject nonetheless. The following paper examines the plantation mistress
in reality and in Morrisons novel. Plantation Mistress and Beloved by Morrison The plantain mistress was, according to many, something of a victim herself in a world of patriarchal
control. She was in charge of a plantation in relationship to the workers in the house and she was also a woman who was more than likely in a position
where she knew her husband, the master of the slaves, was sleeping with female slaves. Her submissive position was one of oppression and pain according to one. In her review
of Catherine Clintons The Plantation Mistress, Sheldon notes that, "their education was severely restricted by the demands of the southern patriarchy and the plantation culture. Depression and anxiety often caused
these women to seek relief in laudanum." Laudanum was a drug and apparently many plantation mistresses were living in incredibly oppressive positions.
In some stories one may see mistresses beating slave women because of jealousy (concerning the masters sexual activity) or perhaps through frustration and their own sense of being abused and
