blue green algaes were successful in pulling what they needed through photosynthesis much like much more advanced plants do today. Relatively simplistic in their structure these early plants floated freely in the water column. Eventually, of course, plants made their way from the water to land. To do so required a number of specific adaptations. One of the first adaptations aquatic plants had to evolve was the more complex morphological structure that would be required to support their weight on land (Hemsley and Pool, 2004). They also needed appropriate mechanisms for nutrient transport. No longer would their entire bodies be free floating and essentially absorbing and photosynthesizing nutrients through every surface cell. Instead, they had to be able to stand upright and develop the means to get nutrients from the bottom of the plant as they were absorbed from the soil through the rest of the plant. Likewise, they had to have the mechanisms in place to distribute the products that were made via photosynthesis throughout the plant (Taylor, Taylor and Kring, 2008). To accomplish this plants developed phloem and xylem cells, cells that specifically function in nutrient transfer (Taylor, Taylor and Kring, 2008). At the same time the external features of the plant were evolving as way. While they had been limited to the aquatic environment a plant wasnt exposed to such problems as too much sun or too little water. The terrestrial environment, however, held those challenges and more. In a terrestrial environment plants often encounter fluctuating environmental conditions which influence their health.
