know. New York goes by Eastern Standard Time or EST. South Africa is two hours ahead of GMT or Greenwich Mean Time (Villers, 2003). Also, while the sun rises in the east, it stays north during the day (Villers, 2003). The sun does rise and set differently in different parts of South Africa. For example, the sun rises in Durban and sets much earlier than in Cape Town (Villers, 2003). After sun set, the sky becomes almost pitch black (Villers, 2003). South Africa is far from home if one comes from New York. For instance, in booking a flight, one will see that it takes more than a day to get there. Yet, finding tickets is not difficult and it is less expensive than one might think. For example, at the Orbitz site, the least expensive flight from New York to Johannesburg is $894 on Northwest Airlines ("Orbitz," 2005). It departs from JFK in New York City at 6:25 in the evening and arrives in Amsterdam at 7:45 in the morning which takes 7 hours and 20 minutes; the second leg of the flight is longer at 10 hours and 35 minutes from Amsterdam to Johannesburg ("Orbitz," 2005). There are apparently no non-stop flights and other options are two stops ("Orbitz," 2005). A student writing on this subject should note that when planning a trip to Africa, there must be several days allotted to flying to and from the destination cities. Although quite far, from a description of South Africa, it appears to be well worth the journey. South Africa is a hodge podge of natural activity, and man made cultural attributes.
