There are several approaches to planning, and in South Africa is may be argued there is a dynamic business environment, the economy is developed, but there are many issues
that need to be considered in terms of the social impacts of business and the political changes that have occurred in the last few decades.
Planning may be seen as important in any environment, but we may argue that in a fast moving economy which has developed rapidly there is the need
to have an adaptive style of planning. There are many approaches which have been adopted. Planning may be seen as the development of a strategy. The first civilian use of
the word strategy was by Socrates, when the term was used in a political context, however planning even in todays world looks to the world of the military for inspiration.
In this context the study of military strategy is ancient, examples, which have been adapted today include; Sun Tzus The Art of
War; (c500BC), Alexander and Philip at Chaeronea in 338BC (Goldenberg, 1997), and then later with The Prince by Nicolo Machiavalli c.505 (Goldenberg, 1997).
