a differentiation advantage. Estimates have indicated that the advantage life of a competitive advantage, without renewal or change is only 18 months (Thompson, 2007). This evidences the need for the
firm to adapt and change, and whichever source of competitive advantage is used at some point there is the need for input from the employees, through intellectual capital (Mintzberg et
al, 2008). To facilitate a firm that is not only able to change, but can take a portative approach it is necessary to develop a culture where there is
the ability to stimulate and generate innovation from the employees and support. To create this culture will require planning, organizing leading and control functions of management to support this approach.
The way these may be used and tools or approaches that can be leveraged in order to help create an environment where these desired character tics are present may be
examined. 2. Planning The role of planning in any business is essential, to be successful a business need to be managed with the knowledge of where it wants to
be, the way it wants to compete and the way that the objectives will be reached. However, planning is not just as activity for the senior management in determining strategy,
it may be seen throughout all levels of an organisation. The strategy, once decided does not self implement, plans need to be developed at all levels, from the long term
