the teacher knows what her students already know about that topic. Teachers need to be able to create appropriate assessments to gather this information (Burger, 2004). The second
step in this process is for the teacher to interpret and reflect on the assessment information collected. This information is the foundation for planning the lessons. The next step is
to plan the lesson. Planning includes selecting materials and determining which instructional methodology will be used to teach this lesson to this classroom of students (Burger, 2004). When planning, the
teacher needs to consider each student and how they learn best. During the planning process, the teacher will determine whether or not small groups will be used during this
instruction. If groups are to be used, the teacher will need to identify how students will be grouped. The teacher also needs to build in ongoing informal assessments. This information
will direct the teacher. Lesson plans may need to be modified to meet the needs of the students. The next step is the actual instruction. Teachers generally use a combination
of whole class and small group work. This model would have the teacher lecturing or explaining the main concept, engaging the whole class in discussion and then, perhaps breaking the
class into small groups for practice. During practice and discussion, the teacher can gain insight into how each student is receiving the material and if they understand it. Assessment is
the next step. This cycle is illustrated in the following graphic. It is circular in nature and never-ending. There are numerous assessment methods. Earlier, ongoing
