study and discussion concerning plagiarism in adult education. Plagiarism in Adult Education The case study to be discussed is Plagiarism by
Adult Learners Online: A case study in detection and remediation by Christine Jocoy and David DiBiase (2006). The authors note that, "Detecting and combating plagiarism from Web-based sources is a
concern for administrators and instructors involved in online distance education" (Jocoy; DiBiase 2006). The authors utilize an online geography course in order to access copy-and-paste plagiarism (Jocoy; DiBiase 2006). In
the study they also employ an examination and evaluation of a strategy to discourage the adult learners from plagiarizing (Jocoy; DiBiase 2006). Int
heir study of working towards locating plagiarism they discovered that manual examination only revealed 3% plagiarism while the online site of "Turnitin.com revealed a 13 percent plagiarism rate among the
same assignments" (Jocoy; DiBiase 2006). Overall the study indicated that through strategies to reduce and educate about plagiarism the students plagiarizing was "measurably" reduced but not "significantly" (Jocoy; DiBiase
2006). They concluded that while educating about plagiarism may prove worthwhile in many cases, it did not serve as a substitute for "vigilant enforcement and systematic detection among the adult
