that is designed to aid teachers in spotting plagiarism (Baule, 1999). EVE looks for Internet sites that might contain text that was put wholesale into a students essay
(Baule, 1999). The instructor, first of all, has to convert the students text into a standard text (txt) document, but once converted, it can be run through EVE, which bring
up a list of possible Web sites that contain text similar to that of the essay. The instructor can then clink on these Web sites and check to
see if the essay has, indeed, been plagiarized. EVEs creators claim about 80 to 90 percent effectiveness (Baule, 1999). To test out the software, Baule (1999) gave EVE a "read-me"
file to mull over and the software gave back a list of sites where the document was available. However, Baule (1999) also makes the observation that EVE search quite slowly,
so checking multiple essays may take quite sometime. This , of course, brings up the question as to whether or not EVE is worth the purchase price to beleaguered teachers.
To find out, a teacher might decide to turn to science and discover EVEs effectiveness via a research study. As Babbie (1986) points out, science is an enterprise dedicated
to "finding out" and research studies can be designed to discover virtually anything (p. 71). Research design addresses the planning stages of scientific inquiry. It is basically a "strategy for
