become a growing problem in colleges and universities-plagiarism. Plagiarism is not a new phenomenon. Literary writers and poets in 16th century England accused others of stealing their work. They also complained that they lost ownership of their own work as soon as it was published. Their protests eventually led to what we know as copyright laws, which placed the ownership of the work with the creator of it. In modern times all educational institutions have rules against any type of plagiarism. Still, reports state that the incidence of plagiarism is increasing in higher education. it has become even more prevalent with the digital age. This essay reports data regarding the rates of plagiarism. The essay discusses the issue as a problem and the steps being taken to curtail its frequency. The Issue of Plagiarism The Center for Academic Integrity conducted a study of 14,000 undergraduates and found that 40 percent admitted to copying at least a few sentences from a source into their own papers (Gabriel, 2010). Other studies have reported plagiarism rates between 3 percent and 16 percent (Walker, 2010). Plagiarism is defined as taking the ideas, thoughts, or words of someone else and claim them as your own. It is the failure to credit the originator of those words, thoughts, or ideas with some sort of citation. In other words, a connection and attribution must be made to the originator. What plagiarism is and how to avoid doing it is usually taught in middle and high schools. There have always been people who plagiarize.
