and why its important not to plagiarize. Discussion Colleges and universities strive to maintain high academic standards, including graduating students whose work reflects well on the institution. Successful
graduates who go on to distinguished careers are probably the best advertising the university has, and any college is grateful when a new students enrolls because he or she has
heard that the institution is a good one. In addition, people who teach at this level, and work in the academic field, tend to be proud of that fact;
that is, they are proud of being associated with higher education, which can be notoriously difficult and challenging. Students have-or should have-a real sense of accomplishment when they are
graduated from a university. All of this comes crashing down, though, when students plagiarize works and try to turn them in as their own. First, a university
education is hugely expensive, one of the biggest investments anyone can make, so it makes no sense for students to copy others instead of doing their own work.
By cheating in this manner, students are cheating themselves out of the opportunity and the challenge of mastering concepts on their own. In addition, when its found out that
a student has plagiarized someone else, he will certainly be disciplined, probably receiving a failing grade on the work; at some institutions he may even be expelled. Finally, students
who plagiarize put the reputation of the college at stake as well, which is why institutions are so committed to ending the practice. At this point, the student might continue
