foster any type of spiritual existence. Ethical behavior - which is defined as exhibiting such values and personal character that coincide with both
the uniqueness and integrity of a given society - is in a constant state of interpretation; that a standard code of ethics exists for one culture does not mean it
is either recognized or respected in another, bringing to bear a tremendous burden upon the global community as to what constitutes a universal approach. To Kohlberg, this common denominator
reflects the religious experience. Kohlbergs ideas of human development are comprised of more than merely physiological growth; rather, they entail myriad spiritual components
that provide the foundation upon which an individual aligns with all living entities. As such, Kohlberg asserted that ethics represent the basis upon which all appropriate behavior is expressed
in a civilized society. To exist without ethics is to exist without social conscience, a reality that leaves within its wake a social order that refuses to acknowledge the
elements of good and bad. Correspondingly, Fontana (2003) points out how the good "arises from the ethics and morals created through culture (through we), the true through the quantifiable,
objective approach of science (through it and they), and the beautiful from the artistic expression and quality of being created through the individual (through I)" (p. 182). While it
