Trying to figure out the "next big thing" and developing a concept to cash in on it will end in a lot of frustration and failure. This paper, however, flies
in the face of reason and discusses how to pitch a TV series to a network. Discussion The student really needs to make a decision about what kind of series
to develop, and that should be personal. Drama, sci-fi, comedy, game shows, reality shows and investigative shows of various types (medical investigators as in CSI, Bones, and NCIS come to
mind) are the genres that seem to have survived; westerns, traditional detective shows (Mannix, Magnum P.I.) and variety shows are long gone. The big trend these days seems to
be in reality shows; its logical to assume this will continue for a while. The reason why producers and networks like them is simple: there are no professional actors or
writers to pay, no plot development that necessitates locations, props or sets; in short, they can be shot on a very low budget and still garner high ratings. Lets try
and invent a different sort of reality show. Devising the concept is the hardest part of the process. Weve watched numerous makeover shows; watched people fish for crab on the
Bering Sea or for lobster in the Atlantic; seen trucks struggling across the Ice Road; watched Bachelors and Bachelorettes; and voted people off the island. There are proposals to base
