become timeless and eternal if kept alive through publication and through viewing and such. The following paper examines, through comparing and contrasting, the ideas of art and creativity as seen
in Luigi Pirandellos play "Six Characters in Search of an Author" and William Wordsworths "Preface to Lyrical Ballads." Pirandello In Pirandellos play
we are presented with six individuals who appear on stage where a rehearsal is taking place. They are searching for the author that created them and then left them on
their own. They have no real meaning and no place to reside, for apparently they were created and then dismissed without setting or story. The father of the group states
that, "Inside us we carry a drama full of pain" (Pirandello 9). This sets the stage, so to speak, for understanding that they are characters that are ripe for story,
ripe for interpretation, and in need of resolution. They are lost as they possess none of these things. The father tells the
director, "having created us alive, then no longer wished, or was he able, to put us materially into a work of art. And this, sir, was a real crime, because
he who has the luck to be born a live character can even laugh at death...the creation never dies" (Pirandello 10). In this we see that the father knows that
as the writer or creator, this individual will get to finish his own story and end his own suffering. But, as characters they are endlessly submitted to a timeless existence
