1990 represents seventeen years of torture and authoritarian rule. Of course, it was not as if the state of Chile would plummet. Ironically, Pinochets interest in economics and politics seemed
to be one that was aligned with capitalist tools, and while socialism was a part of the model, Chile flourished. In fact, because Pinochet was so financially savvy, he was
probably encouraged or supported by the people, at least for a time. Things would get better economically, but on balance, Pinochet was an unscrupulous dictator and few would say he
was a good leader. After his stint began, "the disappeared" would become a problem and soon the tactics of the government would surface, leaving families without loved ones. The people
began to find out about Pinochets cruel activities and the rest of the world knew too. Of course, Pinochet would remain a part of Chiles government after he was no
longer in charge of the country. Yes, even thought he was no longer dictator, his legacy would become well known and he would eventually stand trial in Chile and
elsewhere for all of his crimes. The trials were not meaningful as he never served any time for all of his misdeeds and he passed away shortly thereafter, in 2006.
When examining the life and legacy of this well-known man, there are many uncomfortable details. Above all, Pinochet was known as an authoritarian leader. II. Pinochet and
