-properly! Commercial airline pilots have one of the most difficult jobs in industry, requiring often split-second decisionmaking, keen motor skills and
the ability to remain sharp and focused when subjected to extreme stress after hours of tedium and relative inactivity. Adding to this stress is the fact that many pilots are
required to fly very long schedules with little or no sleep, which most scientists believe is an extreme danger. There are calls for the FAA to institute tighter guidelines on
pilot rest and flight timetables, but so far they have not been addressed. Since commercial pilots can be responsible for the safety of hundreds of passengers on any given flight
for hours at a time, most people would be surprised to learn that the amount of time they spend behind the yoke, and when and how much they are allowed
to sleep, is very loosely regulated (Goode, 2003). In fact, the amount of time a pilot spends in the air on any given flight is not regulated at all, as
Goode (2003) notes: "... limited to 30 flight hours in any seven consecutive days... [and] 1,000 hours for any consecutive 12 calendar months" (p. 310). He also notes that the
only mention of sleep at all is the requirement that each crewmember get at least 24 hours of sleep in a row per week (Goode, 2003). The problem is particularly
severe for long-haul pilots, who may have to stay in the air for 14 hours consecutively in flights over the Pacific, in particular, and who have taken to taking in-flight
