as "Piggy." Along with Simon, who is the most spiritual boy in the group of castaways, Piggy follows Ralph, advising him, helping him avoid mistakes, as Piggy realizes the dangers
inherent in the island environment. The premise of the novel is that the boys were being evacuated from England during wartime and the passenger compartment of their plane ejected
them when it was hit, landing them on a deserted island. The boys soon evolve into two factions, those following Ralph and those following Jack. Ralph endeavors to maintain some
semblance of civilized behavior among the boys, but Jack actively encourages a devolution that prioritizes primitive instinct. Jack leads the boys under his control to enjoy brutality and Piggy makes
a natural target. Also, Jack realizes that Piggy poses a distinct threat to his authority as Piggy presents a logical and intelligent argument against the idea of a beast
lurking in the jungle. One of the "littleuns," i.e., the younger boys, named Phil describes a nightmare that he had and then asserts that when he went outside after waking,
he saw "something moving among the trees, something big and horrid" (Golding 113). Piggy, on the other hand, points out that these fears are false, the product of overworked imagination.
He says, "I know there isnt no beast-not with claws and all that" and he asserts that there is no reason to fear, but then he adds, "Unless we get
frightened of people" (Golding 112-113). As this indicates, Piggy, with considerable intellectual insight, realizes that the greatest danger on the island is the primitive instinct that lurks in the psyche
