powerful in other ways, ways that were truly specific to the work of Bruegel. The following paper examines the life of Bruegel, and then examines certain works, those being "Landscape
with the Fall of Icarus," "The Fall of the Rebel Angels," and "The Tower of Babel." Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Biography
"Pieter Bruegel...was probably born in Breda in the Duchy of Brabant, now in The Netherlands" (Pioch). Another author notes that not a great deal is actually known about his life
but, "like so many northern artists of his time" he had been to Italy and he also "lived and worked in Antwerp and Brussels, where he painted most of his
pictures in the 1560s, the decade in which the stern Duke of Alva arrived in the Netherlands" (ArtArchive). In 1551 he was
taken in as a master in the guild of Antwerp painters (Pioch). He was also "apprenticed to Coecke van Aelst, a leading Antwerp artist, sculptor, architect, and designer of tapestry
and stained glass" (Pioch). It was also in this year that he did his traveling to Italy where he did a great number of paintings that were primarily landscapes (Pioch).
He came back to his home in 1553 and remained there for ten years, after which he moved to Brussels (Pioch). "His reputation as an artist was not as widespread
across Europe" as many other famous artists such as Michelangelo, but "his works had a recognized cash value in his immediate home area" and as such was clearly a success
