beautifully sculpted piece of art, but it is religious in nature. It is a rather moving scene, particularly as it relates to the story of Jesus. Of course, it was
not as if Michelangelo thought up the idea that perhaps Mary took her son in her arms after his death. Pieta-the exact depiction-is something that had been accomplished by many
artists in the past ("The Pieta by Michelangelo," 2007). However, Michelangelo created a young woman to resemble Mary rather than an older woman as sometimes done by other artists ("The
Pieta by Michelangelo," 2007). Instead of trying to depict a realistic version of events, this artist created the most aesthetically pleasing one, and has succeeded at that. Michelangelo does create
a beautiful woman to represent the Virgin Mary. Her features are straight and small, and this is similar to that of the Jesus figure, thus noting a striking resemblance. Mary
is fully dressed but Jesus only has a cloth draped around his hips. When viewed in appropriate lighting, the shadows of the material folds are striking. There is great attention
to detail, which perhaps adds to the evaluation that Michelangelo is a skillful artist. The ribs of Jesus are slightly, and dramatically, carved into the marble but his arms resemble
someone who is of significant strength. For a thin man, the sculpture depicts a very muscular arm and there are muscles shown in his legs as well. While this is
to be expected of the day as the people were not sedentary at all, the fact that the artist shows the body with such detail is notable. One gets
a sense of heaviness to some extent as marble is the material used, but there is also lightness in terms of the overall color and the delicately carved features. In
