was Pierre de Fermat, who is credited as being the founder of modern number theory and probability theory. Biographical information and accomplishments He was born in Beaumont-de-Lomagne, near Montauban
in 1601, and died at Castres on January 12, 1665 (Ball Fermat.html). Fermat was the son of a leader-merchant and was educated at home (Ball Fermat.html). In 1631, he obtained
the post of councillor for the local parliament at Toulouse, and he is said to have discharged the duties of his office with meticulous accuracy and fidelity (Ball Fermat.html). Fermat
devoted the majority of his leisure time to the study of mathematics. His latter life was unruffled safe for a "somewhat acrimonious
dispute with Descartes on the validity of certain analysis used by the latter" (Ball Fermat.html). The dispute was primarily due to the obscurity of Descartes. Due to the tact and
