employees are realizing that their value is defined not only by workplace performance, but by their educational attainment. The life-long education theories presented by authors like Fenwick (2002) suggest
that there is a need to constantly explore new avenues of self-education. Since graduating from the Methodist School of Nursing in 1990, I have worked as a critical care nurse
and have experienced many different applications of both nursing theory and the law. I have recognized the emerging need for paraprofessionals in the area of nursing, medical and healthcare
law. My personal experiences and work in leadership roles have supported my emerging interest in a legal profession, in particular as a paralegal in nursing or medical law.
I have also recognized the correlation between my own interests and the desirability for self-education under the premise of life-long learning. For
decades, theorists have tried to determine what motivates workers in the modern workplace and how education, training and learning fall into line with efforts at motivation. It has been
argued, for example, that "all people in the developed world have a high need to achieve, so in order to motivate them to work hard, all you need to do
is to set stretching goals." But recent studies in motivation in the workplace suggest that simply setting progressive or stretching goals may not be enough to spark motivation or
improve performance. Lifelong learning has been viewed as one way of defining motivation and placing value on individual (Worklife Report, 2000). The cultivation of learning in the
workplace setting is one way in which ethics and attitudes are linked and where career goals and effective communication systems are defined by professional expectations. The focus, then,
