heart a Dionysian rabble-rouser, and by now many people seem to regard him as a devil who unleashed the destructive forces that brought the modern dream crashing down (Perl
13). What an amazing social observation to define "good" and "evil." Such black and white definitions are often questioned as having political overtones or hidden agendas. Cezanne becomes
the god of sunlight and goodness, while Picasso for the sake of this critic, is his foil, or bad guy, or the god of wine, revelry and passion. If
artists political and social views are the mirror of their society, are they never allowed to break the mirror and reflect, prompt or challenge that reflection?
There may be plenty to dislike about Picasso, from his sadistic entanglements with rejected lovers to his sleazy Stalinism and his slapdash overproduction. But
