on his observations, Piaget decided there are four stages in cognitive development. These are reflected in the following chart. Stage Age Cognitive Tasks Example Sensori-motor 0-2 yrs Most learning is through movement they make and the sensations they feel. They learn that they exist separately from objects and other people; that they can actually cause things to happen; and that objects and people still exist even if they cannot see them. Proving an assortment of toys for child to touch and move around enhances this stage. Infant can hold on to rattle. Play Peek-A-Boo during this time and at about 1 yr old, have child find hidden objects. Pre-operational stage 2-7 yrs Intense learning occurs during these years. Children acquire language and learn how to use it. When language is acquired, child is able to use symbols, such as words and pictures, to represent objects. The child continues to be ego-egocentric in that they think everyone sees the world as they do. They understand concepts like counting, past vs. present vs future, and they can classify according to certain criteria such as similar things. Concrete experiences that include letters and numbers need to be offered to the child. They learn to classify them. They are able to classify according to criteria like color, size, shape. Concrete Operations 7-11 By age 7, the child has had many concrete experiences and begins to conceptualize and created logical structures to explain their experiences. During this stage, the child begins to understand the concepts of reversibility and conservation. Conservation means the quantity of something stays the same even if it takes on a different shape.
