Others, for instance, would include Freuds Stages of Psychosexual Development. Vygotskys theories on social learning, and Skinners thoughts about behavior. As an introduction, Piagets stages begin at infancy and
end at about age 15; Eriksons stages move from infancy to death, and while Kohlbergs stages do not attach ages to them, it is generally determined they carry through to
adulthood. Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg are all studied in numerous disciplines including education, sociology and psychology. This makes them important to any of these fields of study. The three are
similar in a number of ways. They are all stage theories, which means the theorist believes individuals journey through each of the developmental stages. They are similar also because they
Piaget and Erikson begin at or around infancy and Kohlbergs theory begins at the first time in life when reason can be determined. Finally, they are invariant and sequential, which
means the theorists believe that each individual will journey through each stage in the sequence identified and that individuals must go through each stage in that order. So, in effect,
they can be perceived as being hierarchical integrations of skills and abilities. They are different in a number of ways, also. First, the emphasis of each is different: Piaget was
concerned with cognitive development, Erikson with psychosocial development and Kohlberg with moral development. The age spans for each stage differs. There are a different number of stages for each theorists.
