Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page research paper that examines the childhood cognitive development theory of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget. Piaget showed conclusively what parents have always known, which is that children do not think in the same manner as adults. His studies on the origin and nature of childhood cognitive development profoundly impacted both childcare and educational practice. This examination of recent literature on Piaget's theoretical perspective demonstrates that his work is still greatly influencing thought on childhood development. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

cognitive ability develops (Taylor, 1996). Piaget showed conclusively what parents have always known, which is that children do not think in the same manner as adults. His studies on
the origin and nature of childhood cognitive development profoundly impacted both childcare and educational practice (Guinard, 1997). The following examination of literature on Piagets theoretical perspective demonstrates that his work
is still greatly influencing thought on childhood development. One of the principal tenets of Piagets theory is that a childs ability to reason different dramatically within certain age levels
(Holme, et al, 1972). For instance, if a four-year-old is shown two liens of beads lined up evenly in two equal rows of five beads each, he will probably say
that each row contains the same amount of beads. However, if the beads in one row are then spaced further apart so that the row takes up more space, the
child will probably say that this row contains more beads than the other one (Holme, et al, 1972). If the same child is asked the same questions one year
later, he would more than likely say that the rows contain the same number of beads and look at the interviewer as if he were an idiot because the answer
is so obvious (Holme, 1972). As this Piaget experiment suggests a childs knowledge builds upon itself from experience and advances with age. Piaget divided childhood development into four major
operational stages (Fischer, 1999). The first stage, the sensory-motor stage, describes the development of an infant who interacts with the world through the senses and motor actions. Toddlers and pre-school
children are in what Piaget referred to as the preoperational stage (Fischer, 1999). Generally, children in this stage of development are between 2 and 7 years of age. This
