the face and direction of medicine since the disciplines earliest inception. Our definition of physician, of course, has changed over time. As medicine, its procedures and efficacy changed
so did our definition of physician. In the earliest pages of mankinds reign on earth there was little scientific about our approaches to the various illnesses and infirmities that
plagued humans. As our knowledge base increased, however, so did the manner in which we approached medicine. The ancient Greeks are most often credited with instilling some semblance
of scientific method into the practice of medicine. Although the Greeks made many advances which eventually propelled medicine from a world of superstition and ritual into the world of
science, however, they had many misperceptions and shortcomings about the nature of illness and the appropriate means of treatment. In all, however, Greek medicine was indeed quite advanced for
its time and Greek physicians deserve responsibility for that advancement. Physicians of those earlier times, however, were far removed from our modern ideas of men of medicine. Never-the-less,
it was those early alchemist and philosophers who took responsibility for treating the ill and for shaping the face of medicine. When we
explore Greek medicine we are immediately immersed in the works of such notable ancient Greek philosophers as Homer, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Erasistratus, and Alcaemon. There was, however, a much earlier
chapter of Greek medicine, a chapter which was more closely akin to the supernatural than to science. Draper (1992) writes that Greek medicine arose, in fact, in:
