One The first chapter talks about the need for physical education in the elementary schools. First, the outcomes or results of physical education are examined. The question asked is just
what does physical education do for youngsters? The answer is a multitude of things ranging from improved self image to a lifelong idea that physical education is important. All too
often people think of schools as simply existent to proliferate instruction about reading, writing and arithmetic and that anything extra is gravy. However, the author points out that physical education
is necessary in elementary school to set students down the right life long path. Elementary schools did not always require physical education. The author provides a history of Physical Education
around the world. The German and Swedish influence is examined and the presidents council on physical fitness is explained. Another idea is explored which is that by allowing children to
participate in sports and other physical activities, work in other areas will improve. This has been a long held concept and research has supported this to an extent. In
addition to writing about this subject in a general sense, inclusive of government mandates and programs, authors provide the reader with further references and materials. Chapter Two Chapter
two gets into the physical needs of the child and why they so desperately require a proper exercise program. It talks about the growing child and what is necessary at
various stages. This is helpful for any instructor, as children need different things at different stages in their lives. It is important to note that teachers should not take a
