in these years. Middle school students have been identified as young adolescents and depending on the school district, students in these grades are somewhere between 10 and 14 (Temple
University, n.d.). While there is no set of characteristics that apply to all middle school students, there are some commonalties among the so-called average middle school student (Temple University, n.d.)
or at least a tendency towards certain characteristics. Intellectually, the middle school student tends to be very curious and their thinking ability changes from the concrete to the more abstract,
they are often eager and willing to learn anything they consider interesting or useful to them, and they prefer hands-on active type of learning environments, especially an environment where they
can interact with their peers (Temple University, n.d.) As for their physical development, these students tend to be very concerned about their appearance, they tend to be hungry all the
time and they are not always interested in strenuous physical activity (Temple University, n.d.). Because of their over-concern about physical appearance, communal showers can be very traumatic for these youngsters
(Temple University, n.d.). This ties in with their psychological and social development where self-esteem issues often arise (Temple University, n.d.). This age group tends to be oversensitive and easily offended
(Temple University, n.d.). Teachers, including student teachers, need to consider the developmental processes in order to meet student needs. Teachers in the middle school program need to have a
